International Power entered the Australian energy industry in 1996 and has grown to become the country's largest private generator of electricity.  International Power Australia is a subsidiary of International Power plc a global company which has business in 19 countries of the world.  Its global headquarters are located in London .

As one of Australia 's leading independent power generators, International Power has nearly 1000 employees across the national business.  International Power also has a major energy retail operation in South Australia and Victoria  in partnership with Energy Australia - with over 400,000 customers, International Power is currently buying Energy Australia out of the partnership. 

International Power Australia owns and operates 3,654MW of renewable, gas-fired and brown coal-fired generating plants in Victoria (Hazelwood Power Station, and Loy Yang B Power Station in partnership with Mitsui & Co), South Australia  (Pelican Point Power Station) and Western Australia (Kwinana Power Station).

International Power plc is a leading independent electricity generating company with 18,375 MW (net) in operation and 312 MW (net) under construction. International Power has power plants in operation or under construction in Australia , the United States of America , the United Kingdom , France , Germany , the Czech Republic , Italy , Portugal , Spain , Turkey , Bahrain , Oman , Qatar , Saudi Arabia , the UAE, Indonesia ,  Pakistan , Puerto Rico and Thailand .
